Accessibility
Our commitment to an accessible website and accessible trips, what we have done, what we know is imperfect, and how to tell us when we get it wrong.
Access is the reason this organisation exists. A website that some people cannot use would be a strange way to say that, so here is where we actually stand.
The website
We aim to meet WCAG 2.2 Level AA across this site. In practice that means:
- Every image has meaningful alt text. Our publishing system will not let an editor save an image without it.
- The whole site works by keyboard, and the focus indicator is always visible.
- Text meets contrast requirements against its background.
- Headings and landmarks are structured so a screen reader can navigate by them.
- Animation respects your
prefers-reduced-motionsetting. - Form fields have real labels and errors are announced.
We deliberately do not use an accessibility overlay widget. They interfere with the assistive technology people already have configured, and they tend to make things worse.
Where we depend on other people
Two parts of this site are run by third parties, and we cannot fix their accessibility:
- Ticketing is on Humanitix.
- Volunteer roles come from Seek Volunteer.
Wherever one of those appears, there is a plain text link beside it that goes to the same place. If a widget fails to load or your browser blocks it, the link still works.
Accessibility on trips
Website accessibility is the easy half. On our trips:
- Every event listing states what the toilet and shower facilities actually are, before you book — not on request.
- We say how far you will walk and over what surface.
- Gear is available to borrow free of charge, always.
- Transport support is available for some trips and we are working on making it standard.
If you have access needs we have not thought of, tell us when you book. It often changes which site we choose, and we would rather change the site than leave someone out.
Tell us when we get it wrong
If you hit something on this site you cannot use, or an event listing that does not tell you what you needed to know, please contact us and choose “Accessibility support”. We will fix it and we will tell you when it is fixed.
